Students Light up with Hour of Code
As part of the International Partnership Program with Code.org, the Hour of Code campaign was carried out with over 500 students at Bhubaneswar. This is part of the initiatives by Aveti Learning to make computer science education accessible to all, with specific emphasis on inclusivity for girls and underrepresented groups.
Despite limited computer facilities in many schools, Aveti Learning ingeniously incorporated unplugged activities to introduce students to the fundamental concepts of coding. Through interactive games like “Dance Party” and “Tic Tac Toe,” the learning experience transformed into an engaging and enjoyable journey.
One enthusiastic student from Unit 8 SSVM School at Bhubaneswar shared, “I am really excited about learning coding. Earlier, I thought computer language was too complex for me, but today, in the Hour of Code activity, I feel that I too can attempt coding. I feel excited and very happy to have participated in today’s event.”
Today session helped me to understand the basics of Artificial Intelligence which I did not know earlier. Through the Tic Tac Toe actiity I could know the steps in solving a problem which I can apply to code a program, remarked another student.
The Head Master at Sri Jayadev Shiksha Kendra School expressed, “We are very happy that the Aveti Team conducted the Hour of Code program and enlightened us about the basics of coding. Now, we will encourage our students more and also invite Aveti Learning to more such coding activities.”
Mohab of Aveti Learning shared his sentiments on the experience, stating, “It was amazing to engage with the students and understand how they think and help them improve their thinking through this exercise.” Facilitating the proceedings at the Bhubaneswar Schools were Victor Lakra and Mohab Ahmad, both coding enthusiasts, along with Bikash Swain, who worked closely with Code.org in designing the program.
As the Hour of Code continues to be celebrated globally from December 11th to 15th, Aveti Learning’s participation stands as a testament to its commitment to empowering students with the skills and confidence to navigate the digital future. The program not only demystified coding but also ignited a sense of excitement and possibility among students who might have initially considered coding as too complex.
